THE HISTORY OF BINGO

"The History of Bingo"
By Bob Szywala

"Bingo's Roots"
As you surf the web trying to find out what historical events happened in the year 1530, the one event, in my opinion, that stands above most is the creation of a lottery called Lo Giuoco Del Lotto D' Italia, which means the clearence of the lot of Italy.  Italy's new lottery turned out to be the world's first bingo game.  The Italian government came up with the game so as to raise additional revenue without raising taxes.  Seems like things haven't changed much.  The player bought a card with numbers on it and from a pool of 90 numbers the winners were determined.  The game was so exciting that to this very day it is still played in Italy every Saturday.  As time went on the game became popular in other European countries with the French version getting close to the way we play today.
"The Unknown Father Or Mother Of American Bingo"
Sometime during the 1920's a carnival worker, unknown to us, came up with their version of the game. They called it "beano" because beans were used as the first dabbers to mark your number. Soon the game became a big hit and kept people playing long after the rest of the carnival shut down. It was this unknown "Carney" who is now the father or mother of American bingo.
"Edwin S. Lowe"
In 1929, Edwin S. Lowe, a traveling salesman whose dream of someday owning his own toy and game manufacturing company stumbled upon a county fair where beano was being played. He saw his opportunity and seized it. To eliminate the chance of players having the same cards, he hired a mathematician who was able to come up with 6,000 different cards or combinations. He invested in printing presses marketed the name of the game as "bingo" and before you knew it, he was a millionaire. On the other hand Carl Leffler the math professor he hired went insane.
"The Next Level"
It wasn't long before churches and fraternal organizations began approaching Edwin Lowe with the idea of running bingo as a fundraiser. This brought bingo up to the next level. Today through out our country millions and millions of dollars are made to help our many causes. This makes everyone a winner. So the next time anyone asks you if anything important happened in the year 1530 you know what to tell them.
